Extension settings, tab by tab EN

General, Video, Audio, Camera and Advanced, and what belongs in each.

The Rekorder extension keeps its settings on five tabs: General, Video, Audio, Camera and Advanced. This article explains what each tab holds so you can find a setting quickly.

Open the settings

  1. Click the Rekorder icon in your Chrome toolbar.
  2. Click the Settings (gear) icon in the popup's top bar.
  3. Pick a tab at the top: General, Video, Audio, Camera or Advanced.
  4. Click Back to return to the recording screen.

Changes apply as soon as you make them. There is no Save button.

In Cloud mode, your settings are saved to your account. In Offline mode, they're saved on this computer. Which mode you're in also decides whether a few settings appear (see below). To learn the difference, read Cloud mode and Offline mode: which one you are in.

General

This tab holds settings about how recording starts and how the extension behaves.

  • Language: Auto (follow browser) uses your browser's language. You can also pick one of the supported languages yourself.
  • Workspace: shows where new recordings are saved. Click Change » to pick another workspace before you start recording. This setting only appears in Cloud mode. See Set where your next recording lands.
  • Countdown: No countdown, 3 seconds or 5 seconds before a new or restarted recording begins. See The countdown before recording starts.
  • Auto camera preview: puts the camera bubble and recording controls into the current tab as soon as you open the popup, so you can position them before you record. When you record a tab, this only applies if the camera Interface setting is UI in tab.
  • Pointer highlight: No highlighting, On move (yellow shadow), On click (red shadow) or On move & click. See Highlight your mouse and your clicks.
  • Multi-monitor: when you record your screen, keeps the recorder tab in focus after you pick a monitor, instead of returning you to the tab you were on. Turn it on if you have more than one monitor. See Record a desktop app, or pick between two monitors.
  • Key bindings: click View » to see Rekorder's keyboard shortcuts and change them. See Keyboard shortcuts, and how to change them.

Video

These settings control the picture quality and the file format of every recording. Higher values look better but make larger files.

  • Resolution: 1080p, 720p, 480p or 320p (all 16:9).
  • Frame rate: 15, 24, 30 or 60 frames per second. 30 is the recommended balance. 15 suits presentations and older computers. 60 suits fast motion, and it makes bigger files and uses more CPU.
  • Quality: High (default), Medium or Low. This sets the video bitrate. A lower setting can also help if your computer records video in software and struggles to keep up.
  • Encoder preference: Auto (recommended), WEBM, MP4 or MP4 (WebRTC). A line under the setting shows the codec your computer actually uses. Your choice follows your account to other computers, but each computer only uses it if it can encode that format. Otherwise it falls back to the best format it has. A format your computer can't encode is marked "(not supported)" and can't be selected.

For guidance on picking values, read Resolution, frame rate and quality explained and Encoder preference and when to change it.

Audio

Camera

The Camera tab controls the camera overlay that adds your face to a screen recording. Most of these settings can also be changed during recording. See Add your camera to a screen recording.

  • Camera: the device used for the overlay.
  • Interface: UI in tab (default) shows the recording controls and camera bubble inside the tab you're recording. Only in preview tab keeps the recorded tab clean and shows the camera in the recording page's preview and in the final video. See "UI in tab" vs "Only in preview tab".
  • Effect: None, Background blur, Virtual background, Dim background, Grayscale background, Portrait lighting or Pixelate background. None avoids extra processing and is best for weaker computers. See Camera background effects.
  • Effects quality: Auto (recommended), Best quality, Balanced or Best performance. It sets how much work an effect does for each frame. Lower settings keep recording smooth on slower computers, with less precise edges around you. It only matters when an effect is on. Click Auto-detect to measure your computer again. See Effects quality, the device benchmark and CPU fallback.
  • Position: one of eight places around the screen edge: the four corners, plus top, bottom, left and right middle.
  • Shape: Original (the unaltered camera frame), 16:9, 4:3, Square or Bubble. The others are cropped.
  • Mirror flip: flips the camera horizontally, like a mirror, so gestures and pointing feel natural.
  • Size: Small, Medium or Large. Bigger sizes show more detail but cover more of the screen.
  • Border thickness: 0 to 5. The default is 1, and 0 removes the border.
  • Border Color: Light or Dark.

Position, shape, size and border are covered in Shape, size, border and position of the camera bubble.

Advanced

  • Logging: records everything the recorder prints to the console during a recording, and downloads it as a log file when the recording stops. A recording that fails to start, or that you cancel, is logged the same way. In Offline mode, a "Saved logs" line lets you download saved logs. Turn this on when you're reporting a problem. See Turn on logging and send a log file to support.
  • Recording history: click View » to review, download or remove recordings saved on this device. This only appears in Offline mode.
  • OPFS Explorer: click Access » to browse, download and remove files Rekorder stores locally. See The OPFS Explorer, and when to reach for it.
  • Reset: clears Rekorder's internal cache and data.

Reset the extension

Reset is the one setting that can destroy work, so use it as a last resort.

  1. Open Settings, then the Advanced tab.
  2. Click Confirm » next to Reset.
  3. Click OK when Chrome asks "Are you sure you want to reset Rekorder's data?"

The popup closes when the reset finishes. Reset also clears the files Rekorder stores locally on your computer. If an upload is in progress, you lose that entire recording. Recordings you saved in Offline mode are stored in the same place. Read What Reset clears, and what it destroys before you use it.
