Fix passkey sign-in and setup problems EN

Solve common passkey setup and sign-in problems, including unsupported browsers, expired requests and missing credentials.

This article covers the errors you might see when adding a passkey in Settings → Security or when signing in with one. For the setup and sign-in steps themselves, see Set up and manage passkeys and Sign in with a Passkey.

Unsupported browser or device

A passkey needs:

  • A secure connection. Rekorder's website and extension already use one, so this only comes up with unusual network or browser configurations.
  • A browser and operating system with built-in passkey (WebAuthn) support, and a way to confirm it's you - your device lock, fingerprint, face, or a security key.

If either is missing, you'll see "Passkeys need a recent browser and a secure connection.", whether you're adding a passkey or signing in. Update your browser or switch to one that supports passkeys, or sign in another way instead:

Setup problems (Settings → Security)

"For your security, sign out and sign in again before managing passkeys."

Adding or removing a passkey needs a sign-in from the last 15 minutes. If it's been longer, Add passkey and Remove stay greyed out. Sign out, sign back in, and return to Settings → Security.

"That passkey request expired. Please try again."

You have 5 minutes to complete the prompt once you click Add passkey. If you take longer, click Add passkey again to start a fresh request.

"Passkey creation was cancelled or no compatible authenticator was available." / "No compatible passkey authenticator is available."

You closed or cancelled the browser's prompt, or your device has no way to create a passkey right now - for example no fingerprint reader or device lock set up, or no security key plugged in. Set up a device lock, fingerprint or face unlock in your operating system, plug in a security key, or try a different device.

"That passkey is already registered."

You tried to add a passkey using the same device lock, fingerprint or security key as one already saved to your account. Check the list in Settings → Security - it's probably already there.

"Passkey setup failed. Please try again."

A general failure. Try again, and contact support if it keeps happening.

Sign-in problems

"Passkey sign-in was cancelled or no matching passkey is available."

You cancelled the prompt, or your browser didn't find a passkey saved for Rekorder on this device. See Missing or unavailable passkey below.

"That passkey request expired. Please try again."

You have 5 minutes to confirm once the prompt opens. On the website, click Sign in with a Passkey again; in the extension popup, click Try again in the window.

"That passkey is no longer registered with Rekorder."

The passkey was removed from your account, usually from Settings → Security. Sign in another way, then add a new passkey for this device if you'd like.

"Passkey sign-in failed. Please try again."

A general failure. Try again, or sign in another way and contact support if it persists.

Missing or unavailable passkey

A passkey saved by a password manager (like iCloud Keychain or Google Password Manager) usually syncs, so your browser can find it on any device signed in to that same account. A passkey tied to a single device, or stored on a physical security key, only works there - on any other device, the sign-in prompt won't find it at all, and you'll need to sign in another way and add a new passkey for that device.

To check which passkeys you have and whether each one is synced, go to Settings → Security. See Set up and manage passkeys for what each entry shows.
