The current tab is a protected tab EN

Which pages Chrome will not let any extension touch, and what to do instead.

"The current tab is a protected tab" means Chrome itself is blocking Rekorder (or any extension) from adding anything on top of the page you have open. It isn't a Rekorder limitation you can turn off - it's a restriction Chrome applies to protect certain pages from any extension.

Which pages are protected

Chrome blocks extensions from injecting content into:

  • Chrome's own internal pages, such as chrome://settings, chrome://extensions, and the new tab page
  • Other browser-internal pages, for example edge:// pages or about: pages
  • Pages showing raw source (view-source:)
  • Other extensions' own pages (chrome-extension://)
  • The Chrome Web Store

Regular http:// and https:// websites, and local file:// pages, are not protected.

What actually happens when you record a protected tab

Rekorder still lets you record a protected tab - it doesn't block the recording. What changes is the overlay:

  • The camera bubble and control bar can't be drawn on top of the page, since Chrome won't let Rekorder inject them there.
  • If you had your camera set to appear as an overlay, Rekorder falls back to compositing your camera directly into the video instead. Your camera still shows up in the finished recording - you just won't see or be able to move it live on the page while recording.
  • Because there's no on-page control bar to pause, resume or stop from, the separate recorder tab that Rekorder opens is brought to the front instead, so you watch and control the recording from there.

Rekorder's popup shows a warning icon (⚠) in the top bar whenever the tab you currently have open is protected, so you know before you start. It appears regardless of which recording mode is selected, since it's a property of that tab.

What to do instead

  • If you need the on-page camera bubble and control bar, switch to a regular http(s):// or local page before you start recording.
  • If you're recording a window, your whole screen, or just your camera (not a specific tab), the warning doesn't apply to you - you can ignore it and record as normal.
  • If you don't mind controlling the recording from the recorder tab instead of an on-page control bar, you can record the protected tab as is.

Troubleshooting

  • The warning icon isn't showing, but the camera bubble still isn't there. A small number of ordinary https:// pages block injected content through their own security policy even though Chrome doesn't treat them as protected. Rekorder falls back the same way - compositing the camera and bringing the recorder tab forward - but the popup can't predict this in advance, so no warning is shown beforehand.
