Telling people you are recording them EN

Recording laws differ by place. This is the part you are responsible for.

Rekorder doesn't tell the people you record, and it doesn't check whether you're allowed to record them. You're responsible for knowing the rules that apply and for telling people, or getting their agreement, where the rules require it.

This article is general information, not legal advice. If you're unsure what applies to you, ask a lawyer.

What Rekorder does and doesn't do

  • The Rekorder popup carries a standing reminder to follow all recording laws and inform participants where required.
  • Rekorder's Terms of Service make you solely responsible for having the consents and permissions the law requires before you record anyone's screen, voice or image.
  • Rekorder doesn't send a notice to the people in your recording, and it doesn't ask them for consent. If you're recording a call or a meeting, they only know if you tell them.

Why the rules vary

Laws on recording differ by country and region, and sometimes by the type of recording. Some places let you record a conversation if you take part in it. Others require every person in it to agree first. Privacy laws such as the GDPR can also apply when a recording contains identifiable people, even if the recording itself is allowed.

When the people you record are in different places, more than one set of rules can apply. If you can't tell which is stricter, follow the stricter one.

Before you record

These steps are good practice, not a guarantee that you're compliant.

  1. Check the rules where you are and where the other people are. Employers, schools and clients may also have their own policies.
  2. Tell everyone before you start recording, not after. Say that you're recording, why, and who will be able to watch it.
  3. Ask for agreement where the rules or your situation call for it. Getting a clear yes on the recording itself is the safest way to keep a record of it.
  4. If someone says no, don't record them. Take notes instead, or record only your own screen and voice.

What your choices in Rekorder change

Who can watch a recording is part of what you're telling people. Decide this before you record, so you can be accurate.

If someone later asks you to stop sharing a recording they appear in, you can take access back. See Unshare, or revoke someone's access.
