Add a passkey from Settings or the sign-in offer, see its status, and remove one you no longer use.
A passkey lets you sign in to Rekorder with your device lock, fingerprint, face, or a security key instead of a password. You can add one from Settings → Security or from the prompt Rekorder shows after you sign in, check each passkey's status, and remove one you no longer use.
Add a passkey
You can add a passkey two ways:
- From Settings: go to Settings → Security, then click Add passkey.
- From the sign-in offer: the first time you sign in to Rekorder's website without already having a passkey, you may see a Create a Passkey? prompt. Click Create Passkey to add one, or Don't show again to dismiss it for good. Dismissing the offer doesn't stop you from adding a passkey later in Settings.
Either way, Rekorder hands off to your browser or operating system, which asks you to confirm with your device lock, fingerprint, face, or a security key. Adding a passkey needs:
- A browser and device that support passkeys, over a secure connection. If yours doesn't, you'll see: "Passkeys need a recent browser and a secure connection."
- A recent sign-in - see below.
You can add more than one passkey to your account, for example one for your laptop and one for your phone.
Recent sign-in required to manage passkeys
To add or remove a passkey, you must have signed in recently. If it's been a while since you signed in, Add passkey and Remove are greyed out in Settings → Security, and Rekorder shows: "For your security, sign out and sign in again before managing passkeys." Sign out, sign back in, and return to that section.
Check a passkey's status
Each passkey listed in Settings → Security shows:
- Its name, taken from the app or device that created it, for example your browser's or operating system's password manager, or a security key's own name. You can't rename it.
- When it was created, and when it was last used, once you've used it to sign in.
- Whether it's synced to your other devices. Passkeys created by a password manager, such as iCloud Keychain, Google Password Manager, or a third-party manager like 1Password, usually sync, so you can use them on any device signed in to that same account. A passkey stored only on a physical security key or a single device doesn't sync, and only works on that device.
Remove a passkey
- Go to Settings → Security.
- Next to the passkey, click Remove.
- Click Remove again to confirm.
The passkey is removed right away, and this can't be undone. If you want to sign in with that device or security key again, you'll need to add it as a new passkey. Removing a passkey doesn't sign you out of Rekorder or affect your other sign-in methods.
Troubleshooting
- "That passkey is already registered." You're trying to add a passkey that's already on your account.
- "No compatible passkey authenticator is available." or "Passkeys need a recent browser and a secure connection." Your browser, device or connection doesn't support passkeys.
- Add passkey and Remove stay greyed out. Sign out and sign back in, then return to Settings → Security.
