Record something confidential EN

There are two ways to record something confidential with Rekorder. In Offline mode, the recording never leaves your computer. In Cloud mode, you hide the sensitive parts with the blur bar before you record, then keep the recording private or share it only with named people.

Which approach to use

• Offline mode is the safest choice when the recording should stay on your device. It can't be shared from Rekorder, and it has no editor.
• Cloud mode with the blur bar suits recordings you need to share or edit, where only parts of the screen are sensitive.

Option 1: Record in Offline mode

In Offline mode, Rekorder saves your recording in Chrome's storage on your device. It doesn't create a recording on Rekorder's servers.

1. Open the Rekorder popup from your browser toolbar. If you're signed in, sign out first.
2. On the sign-in screen, select I don't want to Sign in.
3. Review what Offline mode includes and doesn't include, then select Continue. The popup now shows an OFFLINE badge.
4. Record as usual. You can record a tab, a window, your screen or just your camera.
5. When you've finished, open Recording history in the popup and download the recording.
6. Once the file is safely stored where you want it, delete the recording from Rekorder. Deleting is permanent, and Rekorder asks you to confirm.

Chrome can remove offline recordings you haven't saved if your device runs low on space. Download the recordings you want to keep. See Where offline recordings are stored, and how to keep them.

In Offline mode you can't share a recording from Rekorder, use workspaces or open the editor. See What you give up in Offline mode.

Option 2: Blur the sensitive parts, then keep the link private

Blur the page before you record

The blur bar blurs elements on the page itself. Because the page is blurred while it's recorded, the hidden content never appears in the video. Nobody can remove the blur later.

1. Open the page you're going to record.
2. Open the Rekorder popup and select the blur icon. Its tooltip reads Blur areas in the current tab.
3. Read the short message on the page and select OK. The blur bar appears with three buttons: Select, Clear and Done. Select mode is already on.
4. Move your pointer over the page. A purple outline shows the element you're about to blur. Click it to blur it. Click it again to remove the blur.
5. Use Select to turn picking off and on. Use Clear to remove every blur you've added.
6. When you're happy, select Done. Rekorder shows Ready to record!
7. Select OK, then click the Rekorder icon in the toolbar and select Start.

The blur bar closes when you start recording, but the blur stays on the page.

Keep these limits in mind:

• The blur only applies to the tab you set it up in. If you record a window or your screen, anything visible outside that tab isn't blurred.
• If the page reloads or redraws, the blur can disappear. Content that appears later, such as new messages, isn't blurred unless you selected it.
• The blur bar doesn't hide what you say out loud, or notifications and other apps that appear on screen.
• The blur bar can't run on pages Rekorder isn't allowed to touch. See The current tab is a protected tab.

Keep the recording private

Every new recording starts as Private, and you can't change that starting setting. After the recording has processed, control who can open it from the Share button on the video page.

1. Open the recording and select Share.
2. Under General access, choose an option:
   • Private: only you can open the recording.
   • Specific people: only the people you invite by email can open it.
   • Anyone with the link: anyone who has the link can open it. Don't use this for confidential recordings.
3. If you chose Specific people, enter their email addresses and select Invite.

Teammates in a workspace can still watch

If you record into a team workspace with two or more active members, the other members can open your recordings even when General access is Private. To keep a recording to yourself, record into a workspace that only you belong to. See Set where your next recording lands.
