Camera or microphone permission is blocked EN

Where Chrome hides the switch, and how to record without the missing device meanwhile.

If Chrome has blocked camera or microphone access, it won't ask you again on its own - you have to switch the permission back on from Chrome's settings, not from Rekorder. In the meantime, Rekorder doesn't stop you from recording: it just leaves out whichever device it can't reach.

Why Chrome stops asking

  • The first time Rekorder needs your camera or microphone, Chrome shows its own permission prompt. If you (or someone else) clicked Block, Chrome remembers that choice and won't prompt again until the setting is changed manually.
  • That permission isn't tied to the page you're recording. Rekorder requests camera/microphone access from its own permission tab (an address starting with chrome-extension://), so you won't find the switch under the padlock of your regular tabs - it lives in Chrome's site settings instead.

Turn the permission back on

  1. Open the Rekorder popup and try turning on the camera or microphone toggle. If access is blocked, Rekorder opens a tab titled Rekorder device access showing: "Device access was not allowed. Use the Chrome permission prompt or site settings to allow access."
  2. Open chrome://settings/content/camera or chrome://settings/content/microphone in a new tab. Under "Not allowed to use your camera/microphone," find the entry whose address starts with chrome-extension:// - that's Rekorder's permission page - and remove it or switch it to Allow.
    • You can also do this from the Rekorder device access tab itself: click the camera/lock icon in the address bar and switch Camera or Microphone to Allow.
  3. Close the Rekorder device access tab and reopen the Rekorder popup, or click Allow access on it again. Once access is granted it shows "Device access is enabled" and returns you automatically.
  4. The camera or microphone toggle in the popup now works normally.

Recording without the missing device

You don't have to fix the permission before you record:

  • If the camera or microphone can't be reached, Rekorder leaves that device out of the recording and starts your screen or window capture normally.
  • A blocked microphone still lets you record camera and screen together; a blocked camera still lets you record screen and microphone audio together.

Troubleshooting

  • On macOS, Chrome itself needs camera/microphone access from the operating system too (System Settings > Privacy & Security). Allowing the permission in Chrome won't help if it's still blocked at the OS level.
  • If Rekorder says a device is unavailable rather than blocked, that's a different problem - see "Camera or microphone unavailable".
