Start, stop, pause and resume a recording EN

Every way to control a take: the popup, the on-page bar and the keyboard.

You can start, stop, pause and resume a recording from the Rekorder popup, from the control bar on the page, or with keyboard shortcuts. Pausing keeps the take going in the same recording. The paused stretch isn't recorded.

Start a recording

Choose what to record and set your camera and microphone first. See What you can record: tab, window, screen or camera if you're not sure which to pick. Then start in any of these ways:

From the popup: open Rekorder from the toolbar and click Start.
From the control bar: if the bar is already showing on the page, click Start recording.
From the keyboard: press Alt+Shift+S (Command+Shift+S on a Mac). The shortcut starts a recording with the settings you last chose in the popup.

Pause and resume

Pause when you need a break, want to skip a tangent, or have to set something up off-camera. Resume to carry on in the same recording.

On-page bar: click Pause recording. The button changes to Resume recording. Click it to continue.
Keyboard: press Alt+Shift+P (Command+Shift+P on a Mac) to pause. Press it again to resume.
Recorder tab: the extra tab Rekorder opens while you record has its own pause button, next to stop.

The popup doesn't have a pause button. Use the bar or the shortcut.

The pause shortcut only works while a recording is running. While you're paused, the recorder tab shows "Recording paused" and hides its preview of your screen.

Stop a recording

From the popup: click Stop.
From the control bar: click Stop recording.
From the keyboard: press Alt+Shift+S (Command+Shift+S on a Mac) again.
From the recorder tab: click its stop button.

If you press Stop in the popup while the countdown is still running, the recording hasn't begun and Rekorder discards it.

After you stop, Rekorder uploads and processes the video before it's ready to edit and share. See What happens between stopping and the video being ready.

Stopping isn't the same as restarting or cancelling. Restart throws away what you've recorded and begins again. Cancel & delete throws the recording away. See Restart, Cancel & delete, and Stop: the difference.

The timer

The on-page bar shows the elapsed time as minutes and seconds, for example 4:07. It stops counting while you're paused, so it shows the length of what you've actually recorded.
The popup shows hours, minutes and seconds. It counts from the moment you started and doesn't stop while you're paused. After a pause, it can show more time than the video contains.

Use the bar's timer to judge how long your video will be.
