Cloud mode and Offline mode: which one you are in EN

One needs an account and syncs everything; the other needs nothing and never leaves your machine.

Rekorder works in one of two modes. In Cloud mode you're signed in, and your recordings sync to your account. In Offline mode you don't sign in at all, and your recordings are saved only on your computer.

What each mode gives you

Cloud mode Offline mode
Account Required. You sign in with Google, Microsoft, Facebook, Apple or email. Not needed.
Where recordings go Synced to your account. Saved directly to your computer.
Sharing Yes. No video sharing.
Video editor Yes. No video editor.
Workspaces Yes. No workspaces.
Free allowance 60 minutes and 1 GB of storage. Unlimited recordings saved on your device.
Lost recordings No risk. When low disk space on device or reinstalling extension.

Offline mode is the way to record without an account. Nothing you record in it is uploaded. For the details on what does and doesn't leave your computer, see What leaves your computer in each mode.

Which mode you're in

Open the Rekorder popup and look for these signs.

  • Offline mode: an OFFLINE badge appears where the workspace picker would be. Point at it and it says "You're in offline mode. Click to change." There's no workspace picker or upgrade button.
  • Cloud mode: you're signed in, and your email address shows at the top of the popup's settings, next to a logout icon.

In Offline mode, the settings also show a Sign in button with a cloud icon. Its tooltip reads "Change to Cloud mode".

If you chose Cloud mode but aren't signed in, the popup shows the sign-in screen instead of the recorder. You're not in either mode until you sign in or choose to continue without signing in.

Rekorder remembers the mode you chose, including after you restart Chrome.

Switch from Offline to Cloud mode

  1. Open the Rekorder popup.
  2. Click the OFFLINE badge, or open the settings and click Sign in.
  3. Sign in with Google, Microsoft, Facebook, Apple or email.

For what happens to your existing recordings, see Switching between Offline and Cloud mode.

Switch from Cloud to Offline mode

  1. Open the Rekorder popup and go to the settings.
  2. Click the logout icon next to your email address. This signs you out and closes the popup.
  3. Open the popup again. On the sign-in screen, click I don't want to Sign in.
  4. Read the comparison of what you give up and gain, then click Continue.

The first time you use Rekorder, the welcome page asks you to choose between the two. It also says you can change your choice later from the popup.

Recordings in Offline mode

Offline recordings are listed under Recording history in the popup, and only while you're in Offline mode. From there you can download or delete each one. The popup also shows how much local storage you've used.

Switching to Cloud mode and back doesn't remove your offline recordings. They're still listed when you return to Offline mode.

Offline recordings exist only in the extension on this computer. If you uninstall or reinstall the extension, they're permanently lost, so download any you want to keep first.

If your device runs out of space, Chrome may remove recordings that you haven't downloaded. Download the ones you want to keep, then delete them from the extension to free up space. See Where offline recordings are stored, and how to keep them.
