What leaves your computer in each mode EN

In Offline mode, your recordings stay on your computer. In Cloud mode, they're uploaded, and captions are what make them searchable.

In Offline mode, your recordings never leave your computer. In Cloud mode, the recording is uploaded to your Rekorder account, and if you generate captions, the transcript is what makes it searchable.

Not sure which mode you're in? See Cloud mode and Offline mode: which one you are in.

Offline mode

In Offline mode you don't sign in, and Rekorder doesn't create a recording on its servers. The video, your microphone audio and your camera all stay in Chrome's storage on your device until you download or delete them.

Also in Offline mode:

  • Rekorder doesn't ask for your account details, because you don't have one in this mode.
  • Debug logs stay on your device. Rekorder doesn't upload them.
  • Nothing is shared, because there's no sharing, editor, captions or workspaces to send anything to. See What you give up in Offline mode.

Small reports the extension sends in either mode

Nothing about your recordings leaves your computer in Offline mode. The extension does still send a few small technical reports, whatever mode you're in:

  • An install notice when you first install Rekorder.
  • A device performance check result. Rekorder measures how well your computer handles camera effects and video encoding, and it repeats the check when you install or update the extension, switch modes or sign in. The report contains the result, your number of CPU cores, your memory size, your browser's version string and the extension version.
  • An onboarding notice, only if you're signed in to the Rekorder website in the same browser. In Offline mode, the extension tells your account once that onboarding is complete. It sends the extension version and your browser's version string, and no recording data.

Cloud mode

In Cloud mode you're signed in, and Rekorder uploads what you record.

What is uploaded

  • The recording itself. The video and its audio, including your microphone and camera if you recorded them, are uploaded in pieces while you record. When a piece has uploaded, Rekorder removes its temporary copy from your browser's storage. See Your recording uploads while you are still recording.
  • Details about the recording. When you start, Rekorder tells your account the recording's name, which kind of recording it is (tab, window, screen or camera), your time zone and the recording settings you picked.
  • Your actions on it. Restarting, stopping or cancelling and deleting a recording are sent to your account, and so are any option you change in the popup that's stored with your account.
  • Diagnostic logs when something goes wrong. If a recording fails, a log of what happened can be uploaded with it so support can investigate.

Blur is applied to the page before you record, so blurred content never appears in the uploaded video. See Blur sensitive information before you record.

What makes a recording searchable

Rekorder doesn't caption recordings automatically. A recording becomes searchable by what was said only after you generate captions for it.

  1. When you generate captions, the recording's audio is turned into a transcript with timestamps. This speech-to-text step runs on Rekorder's own servers, and the audio isn't sent to an outside provider for it.
  2. If you then generate a summary or chapters, Rekorder writes them from the transcript text. That text is sent to OpenAI's service for this.
  3. Captions, summaries and chapter titles are what search looks through. See Find the moment something was said.

Until you generate captions, search has no transcript to look through for that recording. See Generate captions for a recording.

For who handles your data and where it's stored, see Who processes your data, and where it is stored.

Deleting what was uploaded

What you upload in Cloud mode stays in your account until you delete it. See How long recordings are kept and Delete everything Rekorder holds about you.
