What Rekorder can see in your Google Drive EN

The access it asks Google for, what that leaves out, and how to take it back.

Rekorder can only see and manage the files it creates in your Google Drive. It can't see, open, list or change anything else, and it only asks for this access when you connect Google Drive to save recordings.

What you're agreeing to

When you connect Google Drive, Google's consent screen asks for one Drive permission: access to the files and folders Rekorder itself creates. Google may word this differently on its screen. Google also shares the basic profile of the account you connect: its ID, email address, name and profile picture link.

Signing in with Google doesn't give Rekorder any access to your Drive. Drive access is a separate request. It only appears when you choose to connect Drive, and only while you're signed in to Rekorder. If you leave the Google Drive box unticked on the consent screen, the connection fails. Try again and leave it ticked.

What Rekorder does with that access

Rekorder uses the access only for Save a recording to Google Drive, and only when you ask it to:

  • It creates a folder named Rekorder in My Drive and uploads a copy of each recording you save into it. The file has the same name as a download.
  • It replaces that copy when you save the same recording again after changing it, so the link to the copy stays the same.
  • It checks whether the copy is still in that folder, so it can show you whether the recording is saved and offer Open in Drive.
  • It shows you which Google account is connected, and asks you to reconnect if Google stops honouring the connection.

What it can't see

  • Your other files and folders. Anything you uploaded or created yourself is invisible to Rekorder.
  • A Rekorder folder you made yourself. Rekorder only recognises a folder it created. If you already have one with that name, Rekorder creates its own.
  • Copies you've moved. Rekorder only writes to its Rekorder folder in My Drive. If you rename that folder, move it out of My Drive or put it in the bin, Rekorder creates a new one on the next save. If you move a copy out of the folder, it stays where you put it, and the next save creates a new copy.

Rekorder stores the connection details Google issues, the basic profile of the connected account, and, for each recording you save, the link to its copy and the status and time of the upload. It doesn't share these with anyone else, and doesn't use them for advertising or to train AI models.

Take the access back

You can do this in Rekorder or in your Google account.

Disconnect in Rekorder

  1. Open Settings and go to the Connectors tab. See Find your way around Settings if you need help.
  2. On the Google Drive card, select Disconnect.
  3. Confirm with Disconnect again.

This removes Rekorder's access with Google and deletes the stored connection details. New saves stop. To save to Drive again, connect again from the same card.

Remove it in your Google account

You can also remove Rekorder's access at myaccount.google.com/permissions. Rekorder then can't save to your Drive. The Google Drive card shows Needs reconnect, with the account it was for, so you know which one to reconnect. Select Reconnect if you want to save to Drive again.

What stays in your Drive

The copies belong to you. Disconnecting, removing access in Google, or deleting a recording in Rekorder doesn't delete them from your Drive. Delete them in Drive if you don't want them.
