When a Drive copy is out of date EN

What makes a copy outdated, and when saving again replaces the file instead of adding one.

A Drive copy goes out of date when the recording changes after you saved it. Choosing Save to Drive again then does one of two things: it updates that same file, or it creates a new one, depending on whether Rekorder can still find your earlier copy.

What makes a copy out of date

A saved copy is the video as it was at the moment you saved it. It goes out of date only when the video itself changes afterwards:

Working on a draft without rendering, adding captions, a summary or chapters, renaming the recording, or moving it between folders doesn't touch the video file, so none of that makes a saved copy outdated.

When a copy is out of date, the Google Drive badge on the video page shows it, and hovering over the badge confirms it. The menu still offers Open in Drive for the old copy. Choose Save to Drive to bring it up to date.

Save again: replace or add a new file

When you choose Save to Drive again, Rekorder first checks whether the earlier copy is still where it left it.

  • If the copy is still in your Rekorder folder in My Drive - not deleted, not in the bin, not moved elsewhere, and still reachable with the Google account you're connected with - Rekorder replaces its contents. The file keeps the same identity in Drive, so its link stays the same and anything you shared or bookmarked still opens it.
    • This also resets the file's name to the one Rekorder normally gives it. If you'd renamed the copy in Drive, saving again undoes that rename.
  • If Rekorder can't find it there - you deleted it, moved it to the bin, moved it out of the Rekorder folder, or you're now connected to a different Google account than the one you saved with - Rekorder saves a new file instead. Any old copy that still exists somewhere in Drive is left as it is, so you end up with two separate files and two separate links.
  • If you renamed or moved the Rekorder folder itself, Rekorder can't find it either, even if the copy inside is untouched. Saving again creates a new Rekorder folder and a new file in it. See Save a recording to Google Drive.

Rekorder doesn't watch your Drive continuously - it checks the copy's status when you open the recording or its menu, and again each time you choose Save to Drive.
