The extra tab that opens when you record EN

What it does, why it has to stay open, and what happens if you close it.

When you start a recording, Rekorder opens an extra tab. Rekorder runs the recording from this tab, so it has to stay open until you stop. If you close it, the recording stops and you can lose part or all of it.

The tab shows the message "Keep this tab open while recording." It also says: "This page is being run by Rekorder to facilitate recording."

What the tab does

  • It captures what you're recording, along with your camera and microphone if you turned them on.
  • It shows the recording timer.
  • It has the same controls as the control bar: Cancel & delete, Restart recording, Pause recording and Stop recording.

What you see on the tab depends on what you're recording:

  • A browser tab: the tab you're recording stays in front. The extra tab sits behind it, and you can use the controls on the page you're recording. Leave the extra tab where it is.
  • A window or your screen: switch back to the window or screen you're recording after recording starts. The extra tab stays open in the background.
  • Only your camera: the extra tab is where you watch and control the recording.
  • A protected page, such as a Chrome page: Rekorder can't show its controls on that page, so the extra tab comes to the front. Use it to watch and control the recording. See The current tab is a protected tab.

For the differences between these options, see What you can record: tab, window, screen or camera.

What can make you lose a recording

These actions can lose recording data while a recording is running:

  • Closing the extra tab yourself. This includes its X button, Ctrl+W, and closing the whole browser window.
  • Navigating the extra tab to another page, or reloading it.
  • Resetting the extension's data. See What Reset clears, and what it destroys.

What you lose depends on your mode:

  • Cloud mode: Rekorder ends the recording and processes what was captured up to then. The last few seconds before the tab closed are not saved. Rekorder then opens the video page in a new tab, the same as after a normal stop.
  • Offline mode: the recording is lost. It isn't saved to your library, and no video page opens.

You can't resume a recording after closing the tab. To carry on, start a new recording.

To end a recording on purpose, use Stop recording rather than closing the tab. See Start, stop, pause and resume a recording.
