Asset file types, size and length limits EN

30 MB per item, 30 seconds for video, and what counts against your storage.

You can import images, videos and audio files as assets. Each file can be up to 30 MB, and videos must be 30 seconds or shorter. Assets count toward the same storage as your recordings.

What you can import

  • File types: images, videos and audio files. Anything else is refused as unsupported.
  • Size: up to 30 MB per file.
  • Video length: 30 seconds or shorter.
  • Audio length: audio files aren't checked for length. The 30 MB size limit still applies.

There's no fixed list of file extensions. Rekorder accepts a file if it's an image, video or audio file that it can read. Your browser reports the file type first, so a file it can't identify as an image, video or audio file is refused before it uploads. A file that passes that check but can't be read as media is refused after upload.

Rekorder decides what a file is by looking at its contents, not its name. A GIF or other still-picture format is treated as an image, so the video length limit doesn't apply to it.

The limits are the same whether you import from the Assets page or from the editor. To import files, see The asset library: import images, video and audio.

Extra rule in the editor

Images can be stretched to any length on the timeline. Video and audio clips can't be shortened, so a clip only goes onto the timeline if it fits. It needs enough total free time in the recording, and one free gap on the timeline that's long enough to hold it. If it doesn't fit, the editor tells you the length of the clip and how much room is left.

To make room, move or remove other assets. For how the timeline behaves when assets overlap, see Cover the track, or push the timeline apart.

What counts against your storage

Every asset you import counts toward your account's storage, in the same total as your recordings. On the free plan, once you've used all your free storage or all your free recording time, imports are refused until you free some space or upgrade to Pro. Deleting a recording or an asset gives the space back straight away.

If your own personal workspace is on Pro, imports aren't held back by the free allowance. A paid seat in a team workspace covers that workspace's recordings, not your assets, so you're still metered for assets if a team seat is the only paid plan you have.

See The free allowance: 60 minutes and 1 GB, explained and What happens when you go over your free limits.

Troubleshooting

  • "File is larger than 30 MB." Compress or trim the file, then import it again.
  • "Videos must be 30 seconds or shorter." Trim the video before importing.
  • "Unsupported file — only images, videos and audio are allowed." Import a different file, or convert it to a common image, video or audio format first.
  • "You have used all of your free storage…" or "You have used all of your free recording time…" You've reached a free limit. Delete a recording or an asset, or upgrade to Pro.
  • "Upload failed. Please try again." Try again. If it keeps failing, see An asset will not import.
