Add a logo, image, clip or background audio EN

Place anything from the asset library onto the timeline, and choose how its sound behaves.

You can place an image, a short video clip or an audio track from your asset library on the editor's timeline. Images and clips appear over your recording. For clips and audio, you choose whether their sound plays with the recording's sound, replaces it, or stays off.

Add an asset to the timeline

  1. Open the recording in the editor. See What you can do in the editor.
  2. In the Edit tab, choose Import assets….
  3. In the Import assets window, click the asset you want. To add a new file first, drag it into the window or choose Browse. It uploads to your library, then appears as a tile you can click.
  4. The asset lands on its own track above the recording's timeline, near the playhead, in free space. The track appears when you add your first asset.

Your changes are saved as a draft automatically. Viewers see the asset only after you choose Apply & render. See Save a draft vs Apply & render.

To bring a file into your library ahead of time, or to see what file types and sizes are accepted, see The asset library: import images, video and audio and Asset file types, size and length limits.

How each type behaves

  • Images are placed for 5 seconds. Drag either edge of the block to make it shorter or longer. The minimum is half a second.
  • Video clips keep their own length. You can't stretch or shorten them.
  • Audio has no picture. It plays under the recording for its own length, and you can't stretch or shorten it.

Images and clips are shown full frame, over the whole picture. Each is scaled to fit inside your recording's frame, with black bars if the shapes don't match. There's no corner placement or resizing on screen, so a logo image covers the recording while it's on the timeline. Keep a logo's block short, or use an image that's already sized the way you want it to appear.

Assets can't overlap each other. When you drag one, it stops at its neighbour instead of pushing it aside. Blocks snap to nearby edges, which leaves no sliver of space between them.

Move, copy or remove an asset

Right-click the asset's block for these options:

  • Play selection plays just that stretch.
  • Duplicate segment puts a copy in the next free spot.
  • Delete segment removes the asset from the timeline. It stays in your library.
  • Move earlier and Move later swap it with the asset next to it.

To change where an asset starts, drag the block along the track.

Choose how its sound behaves

Video clips and audio assets have two options in the right-click menu. Images have no sound, so they don't show these.

  • Merge audio is on by default. The asset's sound plays together with the recording's sound, both at full level. Use it for background music you want to hear alongside your voice.
  • Merge audio turned off makes the asset replace the recording's sound while it plays. The recording is silent for that span. The block shows an OW badge (short for overwrite). Use it when the clip should be heard on its own.
  • Mute turns the asset's own sound off. The recording's sound plays normally, whatever Merge audio is set to.

These options only affect the asset's span. Outside it, the recording's sound is unchanged. To silence the recording's own sound instead, see Silence a section without cutting the picture.

The preview in the editor is a best guess. The exact mix of sounds is only certain in the rendered video, so play the video after you render to check it.

Cover the recording, or make room for a clip

By default, an asset sits over the recording and covers it. For a video clip, you can choose Push timeline in the right-click menu instead. That opens a gap in the recording so the clip plays on its own and the rest of the recording moves later. See Cover the track, or push the timeline apart.

Troubleshooting

  • "This clip is longer than the free space left in the recording." Video and audio can't be shortened, so the total length of your assets can't be more than the recording's length. Delete an asset, or choose a shorter one.
  • "This clip needs one free gap that long." The clip needs one uninterrupted stretch of free space. Move or remove assets to open a wider gap, then try again.
  • A file won't upload. See An asset will not import.
  • The asset isn't in the video viewers watch. Your changes only reach viewers after you choose Apply & render.
  • You can't get the original back. Editing doesn't change the original. See Editing is non-destructive: getting the original back.
