Move, hide or pop out the camera while recording EN

Reposition the bubble mid-take, switch it off, or send it to Picture-in-Picture.

You can change the camera during a recording without stopping. You can move the bubble so it doesn't cover something, turn the camera off and back on, or pop the bubble out into a Picture-in-Picture window. What you can do depends on where the camera bubble appears while you record.

  • Recording a tab with the Interface setting on "UI in tab (default)": the bubble sits on the page you are recording. You can drag it, close it and pop it out.
  • Recording a window or your screen, or a tab with "Only in preview tab": the camera is added to the video by the recorder tab, so there's no bubble on the page. You can still turn the camera on and off and move it between positions, but you can't drag it or pop it out.

For more on the two Interface options, see "UI in tab" vs "Only in preview tab".

Move the camera bubble

When the bubble is on the page, drag it anywhere inside the tab. It can't be dragged past the edge of the visible page. Because the tab is being recorded, viewers see the bubble move too.

In any mode except camera-only recording, you can also use two keyboard shortcuts:

  • Move camera left moves the camera to the next position, clockwise.
  • Move camera right moves it to the next position, counter-clockwise.

There are eight positions: the four corners and the middle of each edge. These shortcuts have no keys assigned by default, and they only work while a recording is running. To set keys for them, see Keyboard shortcuts, and how to change them.

To choose where the camera starts, or to change its shape and size, see Shape, size, border and position of the camera bubble.

Turn the camera off or back on

Use any of these:

  • Click Toggle camera (the camera icon) on the control bar. When the camera isn't on the page, the button is in the recorder tab instead.
  • Hover over the bubble and click × (Disable camera). This only works when the bubble is on the page.
  • Press the Turn camera on or off keyboard shortcut. It has no keys assigned by default, and it does nothing in camera-only recordings.

While the camera is off, it isn't in the recording. When you turn it back on, Rekorder starts the camera again. If the camera can't start, you'll see a warning, and the recording continues without it.

Rekorder remembers your choice. If you turn the camera off during a recording, it stays off for your next recording until you turn it back on.

Pop the camera out into Picture-in-Picture

Picture-in-Picture (PiP) moves the camera into a small floating window that stays on top of your other windows. This option only appears when the bubble is on the page you're recording.

  1. Hover over the camera bubble.
  2. Click Picture-in-Picture.
  3. To bring the bubble back, click Exit PiP mode on the control bar, or close the floating window.

While the camera is popped out, the bubble is removed from the page. Your camera is therefore not in the recording until you bring the bubble back. Use PiP to watch yourself without covering the page. To keep your face in the video, move the bubble instead.

If your browser doesn't support Picture-in-Picture, the button doesn't appear.
