Cut out a mistake, and reorder what is left EN

Split at the playhead, delete, duplicate and drag segments into a new order.

To cut out a mistake, split the recording into segments in the editor, then delete the segment you don't want. You can also duplicate segments and drag them into a new order. Nothing changes the original recording until you render.

Open the editor first. See What you can do in the editor.

How segments work

When you open the editor, the whole recording is one segment on the timeline. Each split creates another one. Every segment gets a letter based on its place in the original recording, so you can still tell which part is which after you rearrange them.

  • Click a segment to select it.
  • Ctrl-click (⌘-click on Mac) to add or remove segments from the selection.
  • Shift-click to select a range of segments.
  • Press Ctrl+A (⌘+A on Mac) to select every segment.

Cut out a mistake

  1. Play the recording, or click the ruler above the track, to put the playhead at the start of the mistake.
  2. Right-click the track and choose Split at playhead.
  3. Move the playhead to the end of the mistake and split again.
  4. Click the segment between the two splits to select it.
  5. Press Delete (or Backspace), or right-click the segment and choose Delete segment.

The segments on either side close up, so the video plays straight through where the mistake was.

You can also choose Split here from the same right-click menu. It splits at the point you right-clicked instead of at the playhead.

Cut a span in one step

Hold Shift and drag across the track to select an area. Then right-click it and choose Delete selection. The editor splits at both edges of the area and removes what is inside. The same menu has Create segment from selection, which turns the area into its own segment without deleting it.

Reorder segments

Drag a segment left or right and drop it where you want it. The other segments shift to make room. Playback follows the new order.

Drag without holding Shift. Shift-drag selects an area instead.

To move by one slot at a time, right-click a segment and choose Move earlier or Move later. If several segments are selected, they all move together.

Duplicate a segment

Right-click a segment and choose Duplicate segment. The copy appears straight after the original. Duplicate works on one segment at a time, so it isn't offered when several are selected.

Undo a change

Choose Undo or Redo in the Edit tab, or press Ctrl+Z (⌘+Z on Mac) and Ctrl+Shift+Z (⌘+Shift+Z on Mac). Undo works step by step, so a deleted segment comes back without affecting your other edits.

Limits and side effects

  • You can't delete every segment. The editor always keeps at least one.
  • A split does nothing if the playhead is right at the edge of a segment.
  • Splitting, deleting, duplicating or reordering removes any silences you've detected in the Audio tab. Run Detect again afterwards. See Remove all the dead air automatically.
  • The same changes turn any overlay that pushes the timeline apart back into a plain overlay. Set it up again if you still want it. See Cover the track, or push the timeline apart.

Saving your edits

The editor saves your changes as a draft automatically. Viewers keep watching the current video until you choose Apply & render. Rendering also clears the recording's transcript, summary and chapters. If you change your mind, Restore original discards every edit. See Save a draft vs Apply & render and Editing is non-destructive: getting the original back.
