Silence a section without cutting the picture EN

Select a span on the track and mute just its audio.

You can mute part of a recording in the editor and keep the video playing as normal. Select a span on the track and mute it. The picture stays, and the sound goes quiet for that span.

Mute a section

  1. Open the recording in the editor. From the recording's video page, choose Edit and trim video in the Edit tab. See What you can do in the editor.
  2. Hold Shift and drag across the track, from where you want the silence to start to where you want it to end. A highlighted area shows your selection.
  3. Right-click the area and choose Mute selection (audio only).

The muted span appears on the track. Press play to check it. The preview stays silent over the span.

A plain drag, without Shift, reorders segments instead. A very short drag counts as a click and doesn't create a selection. To drop a selection, choose Clear selection in the same right-click menu.

Mute a whole segment instead

If the sound you want to silence is already its own segment, right-click the segment and choose Mute this segment. If you've selected several segments, the option reads Mute selection and mutes them all.

Remove a mute

Double-click the muted span on the track. You can also right-click it and choose Remove mute.

To take back the last thing you did, choose Undo in the Edit tab.

Good to know

  • A mute follows its audio. If you move a segment or split it, the mute stays with the sound it covers. If you delete the part of the recording it covers, the mute goes with it.
  • It only silences the recording's own sound. Audio from an imported clip or background track isn't muted. Each of those has its own Mute option. See Add a logo, image, clip or background audio.
  • Filler-word mutes look the same. Muting filler words adds spans like these, and you remove them the same way. See Mute filler words.
  • Detected silences are cleared. If you've run silence detection, adding a mute clears the highlighted silences, because they'd no longer line up. Run Detect again if you still need them.
  • Your viewers hear it only after you render. Changes are saved as a draft automatically. The video people watch changes when you choose Apply & render. See Save a draft vs Apply & render.
  • You can still go back. Editing doesn't change the original. See Editing is non-destructive: getting the original back.
