Record a desktop app, or pick between two monitors EN

What screen capture reaches beyond the browser, and how the monitor choice works.

Rekorder can record more than the browser. Choose A window to record any app window on your computer, or The entire screen to record a whole monitor. Both open Chrome's own share dialog, where you pick what to capture.

Record a desktop app or a screen

  1. Click the Rekorder icon in your toolbar to open the popup.
  2. Choose a capture mode: A window to record one app window, or The entire screen to record a whole monitor. The current browser tab and camera-only modes don't record anything outside the browser.
  3. Start the recording. Rekorder opens its recorder tab and Chrome shows the share dialog from it.
  4. In the dialog, pick the window or screen you want to record and confirm.
  5. Switch to the app or screen you're recording. The recorder tab shows a reminder: "A window is being recorded. Switch back to that window after recording starts," or "Your screen is being recorded. Switch back to the screen after recording starts."

If you cancel the share dialog, no recording is made.

The window you pick doesn't have to be a browser window. It can be any app that Chrome lists in the dialog. For the difference between tab, window, screen and camera recording, see What you can record: tab, window, screen or camera.

Choosing between two monitors

When you record the entire screen, Chrome shows every monitor in the share dialog and you pick one. Chrome doesn't tell Rekorder which monitor you picked. That matters for where you land after you confirm, so Rekorder gives you a setting for it.

The Multi-monitor setting is in the popup's settings, on the General tab.

  • Off (the default): after you pick a screen, Rekorder takes you back to the tab you were on. This suits a single monitor.
  • On: the recorder tab stays in front after you pick a screen instead of returning you to your original tab. Turn this on if you have more than one monitor.

The setting only changes which tab is in front. It doesn't change which monitor is recorded. That's always the one you pick in Chrome's dialog.

Window recording doesn't need this setting. If you pick another window or app, that window comes to the front. If you pick the window that holds the recorder tab itself, Rekorder returns you to the tab you were on.

What's different from a tab recording

Some features work only when you record a browser tab. In a window or screen recording you won't get:

To stop a window or screen recording, use either the popup or the recorder tab. For pausing and resuming too, see Start, stop, pause and resume a recording.

Sound

To record sound from your computer along with the picture, turn on Source sound on the Audio tab of the popup's settings. When you record a window or the entire screen, this records the system sound. Chrome on Linux doesn't support recording system sound. For the details, see Record the sound from a page or from your computer and Why there is no system sound on Linux.
