What you can record: tab, window, screen or camera EN

Four capture targets, what each is good for, and why only a tab starts without a picker.

Rekorder can record the current browser tab, a single window, your entire screen, or just your camera. You choose one with the four icons in the extension popup before you press Start. A tab is the only screen source that starts recording straight away. Window and screen recordings first ask you to pick what to share in a Chrome dialog.

The four options

Hover over an icon in the popup to see its name.

Icon name What it records Good for
The current browser tab The tab you were on when you opened the popup Web app demos, bug reports, walkthroughs of a single page
A window One application window of your choice Showing one app, such as a desktop program, without exposing the rest of your screen
The entire screen Everything on one monitor Switching between several apps, or showing your desktop
Camera only Your camera, with no screen Talking-head videos and intros

Tab

The tab starts recording as soon as you press Start. Rekorder already knows which tab to capture, so there's nothing to choose.

With a tab you also get the on-page recording controls and the camera bubble inside the tab you're recording. See "UI in tab" vs "Only in preview tab" if you'd rather keep the tab clean.

A tab recording can't capture Chrome's own pages or the Chrome Web Store. See "The current tab is a protected tab".

Window and entire screen

Chrome needs your explicit permission to capture anything outside a browser tab. After you press Start, Chrome shows its own share dialog.

  1. Choose A window or The entire screen in the popup.
  2. Press Start.
  3. In Chrome's dialog, pick the window or the screen you want to share.
  4. Confirm in the dialog. Recording begins.

If you cancel the dialog, or close it without choosing, no recording is started and nothing is kept.

The dialog is Chrome's, not Rekorder's. Rekorder can't skip it or remember your choice, so you'll see it every time you record a window or screen. To record a desktop app or choose between two monitors, see Record a desktop app, or pick between two monitors.

Camera only

Camera only records your camera and nothing from your screen, so there's no share dialog. Chrome may still ask for camera access the first time. See Record just your camera, with no screen.

Camera and sound with each option

The camera and microphone icons in the popup work with the tab, window and screen options. Turn on the camera to add it to a screen recording as a bubble. See Add your camera to a screen recording and Record your voice and pick a microphone.

The Source sound setting records the sound from what you're capturing:

  • With a tab, it records that tab's sound.
  • With a window or the entire screen, it records your computer's system sound.
  • Chrome on Linux doesn't support recording system sound.

For details, see Record the sound from a page or from your computer and Why there is no system sound on Linux.
