Restart, Cancel & delete, and Stop: the difference EN

One keeps the take, one throws it away and starts again, one finishes it.

Stop finishes your recording and keeps it. Restart throws away what you've recorded so far and begins again. Cancel & delete throws the recording away and doesn't start another.

Stop Restart Cancel & delete
What happens to the footage Kept Deleted Deleted
Does recording continue? No Yes, from the beginning No
Do you end up with a video? Yes Yes, once you stop the new take No
Asks you to confirm? No Yes, except with the keyboard shortcut Yes, except with the keyboard shortcut

Stop

Stop ends the recording and keeps it. Rekorder then uploads and processes the video so you can edit and share it. See Start, stop, pause and resume a recording for every way to stop, and What happens between stopping and the video being ready for what comes next.

If you stop during the countdown, before recording has begun, there's nothing to keep and Rekorder discards it.

Restart

Restart is for a take that has gone wrong and that you'd rather redo than fix. Rekorder deletes everything recorded so far and starts a new take with the same settings. It's the same recording, so you don't end up with two entries. The minutes and storage the discarded footage used are given back to you.

Restart works whether the recording is running or paused. If you've set a countdown, it runs again before the new take begins. See The countdown before recording starts.

When you restart from a button, Rekorder asks "Restart recording?" and tells you your current progress will be lost. Choose Restart to go ahead or Cancel to keep recording.

Cancel & delete

Cancel & delete is for a recording you don't want at all. Rekorder stops recording and permanently deletes what you recorded. No video appears in your library, and the recorder tab closes.

Rekorder asks "Delete recording?" and tells you the recording will be permanently deleted. Choose Delete to go ahead or Cancel to keep recording. Once you delete, you can't get the take back. There's no trash. In Offline mode, the copy stored on your computer is deleted too.

If you'd rather keep the take and remove the mistakes, stop the recording and trim it in the editor instead. See Clean up a take instead of recording it again.

Where to find them

  • On-page control bar: hover the buttons to see their labels. Restart recording and Cancel & delete sit next to the stop and pause buttons.
  • Recorder tab: the extra tab Rekorder opens while you record has the same two buttons. See The extra tab that opens when you record.
  • Keyboard: Alt+Shift+R (Command+Shift+R on a Mac) restarts the recording. Cancel & delete has no default shortcut. You can assign one if you want it. See Keyboard shortcuts, and how to change them.

The Rekorder popup doesn't have Restart or Cancel & delete buttons while you record.

Shortcuts don't ask first

The keyboard shortcuts for restart and cancel act straight away, with no confirmation. Check your keys before you press them. Cancel & delete has no default shortcut, so it only works if you've set one up yourself.
