Generate a summary EN

A condensed account of what a recording covered, editable and searchable.

A summary is a short account of what your recording covered. Rekorder writes it from the recording's captions, and you can edit it afterwards. Viewers see it under the video, and search can find recordings by it.

Generate a summary

You need captions first, because Rekorder builds the summary from the transcript. See Generate captions for a recording. Only the person who owns the recording can generate a summary.

  1. Open the recording.
  2. In the Edit tab, select Auto-generate Summary.
  3. Read the prompt: "Generate a summary of this recording from its transcript using AI?" Select Generate.
  4. When you see "Summary generated", select OK.

The summary appears in the Summary section below the video. It's short, at most 255 characters, and it's written in the recording's caption language. See Caption languages, and how the language is chosen.

If there are no captions yet, Rekorder says "Generate captions first — a summary or chapters cannot be created without one."

Write, edit or delete a summary

You don't have to use the generated text. As the owner, you can also write your own or change the generated one.

  • Write your own. If there's no summary, select Add a summary… under Summary, type your text and save. This doesn't need captions.
  • Edit it. Hover over the summary and select the pencil icon. Change the text, then press Enter to save or Escape to cancel.
  • Delete it. Hover over the summary and select the trash icon, then confirm. "The summary will be removed."

A summary you write yourself is limited to 255 characters, the same as a generated one.

Generate a new summary

If you select Auto-generate Summary when a summary already exists, Rekorder warns you: "This will replace the current summary. Generate a new one from the transcript using AI?" Selecting Generate replaces the old text, including any edits you made to it.

Regenerating your captions doesn't touch the summary.

Who sees the summary

Anyone who can open the recording sees the summary. Hiding the transcript from viewers doesn't hide it. If there's no summary, viewers see "No summary yet." Only you can add, edit, delete or generate one.

Things to know

  • Rendering clears it. Applying edits re-renders the video and clears the transcript, summary and chapters. Rekorder brings the captions back if you had them, but not the summary, so generate it again afterwards. See Why rendering clears captions, summary and chapters.
  • Offline recordings have no captions. Without captions, you can't generate a summary. You can still write one yourself. See What you give up in Offline mode.

If generation fails

If you see "Generation failed" with "Something went wrong while generating. Please try again.", wait a moment and select Auto-generate Summary again. Your existing summary stays as it was.
