Does Rekorder read the pages I visit? EN

What the extension can see, and what it does with it.

No. Rekorder doesn't read your browsing history and doesn't read the pages you visit. It can only see what you choose to record, and it only works on the tab you're using when you start.

What the extension can't do

  • It can't see your browsing history. Rekorder doesn't ask Chrome for access to your history or to a list of your open tabs.
  • It can't read other websites. The only site it asks for special access to is rekorder.app, so the extension and your account can talk to each other. It doesn't ask to read or change data on other websites.
  • It doesn't run in the background on every page. Chrome gives Rekorder temporary access to a tab only when you click the Rekorder icon or use a keyboard shortcut on it.

For the full list of permissions, see What permissions the extension asks for, and why.

What it does on the tab you use

When you open Rekorder on a tab or start a recording there, it adds its own on-page parts to that tab, such as the control bar and the camera bubble. These are only there so you can control the recording. Rekorder doesn't read the text or content of the page.

Rekorder can't add these parts to Chrome's own pages, such as settings pages. See "The current tab is a protected tab".

What it does see

When you record, Rekorder captures what's on the screen, tab or window you picked, plus any camera and microphone you turned on. That is the recording, and it includes anything visible on the page while you record. Capture starts only when you start a recording, and Chrome shows its own indicator while it's active.

A few details about the tab you record are used too:

  • The tab's title becomes the recording's name when you record a tab. In Cloud mode that name is sent to your account with the recording.
  • The site's domain is used in the file name if you download a recording of a tab.
  • The tab's address can appear in the diagnostic log Rekorder writes if a recording fails. If you send that log to support, it may include the address of the tab you were recording.

Only the tab you recorded is involved. Rekorder doesn't collect the titles or addresses of the other tabs you have open.

Keeping sensitive content out of a recording

Because the recording shows whatever is on screen, close anything private before you start, or blur it. See Blur sensitive information before you record and Record something confidential.

To see what is uploaded in Cloud mode and what stays on your computer in Offline mode, see What leaves your computer in each mode.
