Split, select, zoom, snap, undo and redo without leaving the timeline.
The editor has keyboard shortcuts for playing, selecting, deleting, undoing and zooming. Some of them combine a key with a mouse action on the timeline. Use Ctrl on Windows, Linux and ChromeOS, and ⌘ (Command) on a Mac.
The editor also lists these shortcuts at the bottom of the Edit tab in the side panel.
| Shortcut | What it does |
|---|---|
| Space | Play or pause. |
| Ctrl/⌘+Z | Undo. |
| Ctrl/⌘+Shift+Z | Redo. |
| Ctrl/⌘+A | Select all segments. |
| Delete or Backspace | Delete the selection: an area, a selected clip you've added, or the selected segments. |
| Esc | Clear the current selection. |
| Ctrl/⌘+Click | Add a segment to your selection, or remove it from the selection. |
| Shift+Click | Select every segment between your current selection and the one you click. |
| Shift+Drag across the track | Select an area of the timeline. Alt+Drag does the same. |
| Shift+Scroll | Zoom the timeline in or out around your pointer. |
A plain drag on a segment reorders it. Hold Shift or Alt while you drag to select an area instead. A plain scroll moves the timeline sideways.
The keyboard shortcuts don't work while your cursor is in a text field, such as the silence settings.
There's no key for splitting. Right-click the timeline instead:
For what you can do with the pieces, see Cut out a mistake, and reorder what is left.
After you Shift+Drag an area, right-click it to see what you can do with it. You can play it, mute it (audio only), merge segments, create a segment from it, delete it or clear the selection. Pressing Delete removes the area directly.
Press Ctrl/⌘+Z to undo your last edit and Ctrl/⌘+Shift+Z to redo it. The Undo and Redo buttons at the top of the Edit tab do the same and are greyed out when there's nothing to undo or redo.
Undo only steps back through edits you made in this editing session. To go back to the unedited recording, see Editing is non-destructive: getting the original back.
Zoom in to place cuts precisely, or out to see the whole recording. You can:
The Snap segments button above the timeline is on by default. While it's on, an image, clip or audio file you drag on the timeline snaps flush against the start or end of the timeline, or against the edge of a neighbouring clip, when it gets close. This stops small slivers of empty space from appearing between them. Click the button again to turn snapping off if you want to leave a deliberate gap.
