Can I record a video call? EN

Yes, the same way as anything else on screen. Check the consent rules where you are first.

Yes. Rekorder records a video call the same way it records anything else on your screen. Before you start, check the recording and consent rules where you and the other participants are, because Rekorder can't do that for you.

Many places require you to tell people, or get their agreement, before you record them. The rules vary by country and region, and can depend on where each participant is. Rekorder's popup carries a standing reminder to follow all recording laws and inform participants where required. You're responsible for following them.

For more on telling people you're recording, see Telling people you are recording them.

Choose what to record

What you pick depends on where the call is running:

  • Tab: Use this for a call in a browser tab, such as Google Meet or a web version of Zoom or Teams.
  • Window or Screen: Use one of these for a call in a desktop app, or if you want to record more than the call tab. Rekorder can record apps outside the browser, and you can also pick between monitors. See Record a desktop app, or pick between two monitors.

Get the sound right

A call has two kinds of sound: your voice and everyone else's.

  • Your voice comes from your microphone. Pick the microphone you want in the Microphone setting before you start. See Record your voice and pick a microphone.
  • The other participants' voices come from the sound of the tab, or from your computer's system sound. Turn on Source sound to capture it. It records the sound of the current tab, or the system sound when you record a window or the entire screen.

If you want the other people's voices in the recording, keep Source sound on. See Record the sound from a page or from your computer.

Chrome on Linux doesn't support recording system sound. On Linux, record the call in a tab if you need the other participants' voices. See Why there is no system sound on Linux.

Start recording

  1. Join or open the call.
  2. Open Rekorder from your toolbar and choose Tab, Window or Screen.
  3. Check that your microphone is selected and that Source sound is on.
  4. Start the recording, and let the participants know if you're required to.
  5. Stop the recording when the call ends.

For the full steps, see Start, stop, pause and resume a recording.
