Find the moment something was said EN

Search covers titles, transcripts, summaries, chapters and comments, not just names.

Use the search box in the top bar of your dashboard to find a recording by something said in it, not just by its name. Search looks through titles, transcripts, summaries, chapter titles and comments. It also matches the name of the person who made the recording.

Search for a word or phrase

  1. Click the search box in the top bar and type a word or phrase. Type at least two characters.
  2. Wait a moment. Suggestions appear as you type, up to eight at a time.
  3. Click a suggestion to open that recording. Or use the arrow keys to move through the list and press Enter.
  4. To see every match instead, press Enter without picking a suggestion. Rekorder opens a Search page with up to 80 results. Press Escape to close the suggestions.

Each result shows a snippet of the text that matched, with your words highlighted. A label in front of the snippet tells you where the match was found: Title, Transcript, Summary, Chapter or Comment. Suggestions also use Author when your words match the name of the person who made the recording. Titles rank above other matches, and transcript matches rank lowest, so a recording with your words in its title comes first.

Jump to the exact moment

A result opens the recording from the start. It doesn't skip to the second the phrase was spoken. To get there:

  1. Open the result and select the Transcript tab next to the video.
  2. Find the line from the snippet. Each line has a time next to it.
  3. Click the line to jump the video to that time.

If you want to find the line on the page faster, use your browser's find command (Ctrl+F, or Cmd+F on a Mac) in the transcript.

The Back button on the video page returns you to your search results.

How your words are matched

  • Capital letters don't matter.
  • Punctuation and quotation marks are ignored. Searching for a phrase in quotes doesn't require an exact match.
  • A word can match the start of a longer word, so a short word finds longer ones that begin with it.
  • Words of one character are ignored, and only the first five words you type are used.
  • Reactions (emoji) aren't searched. Comments are, including the commenter's name and email address.

What search covers

Search only shows recordings you're allowed to see:

  • Your own recordings in the workspace you're currently in.
  • Recordings other people have shared with you.
  • Public recordings you've opened while signed in.
  • Your teammates' recordings in the current workspace, once it has two or more active members.

Search covers one workspace at a time. To search another workspace, switch to it first. See What is a workspace for how workspaces work.

If a recording doesn't show up

  • It has no transcript yet. Words spoken in the recording can only be found once it has captions. Title matches still work without them. See Generate captions for a recording.
  • It was rendered after the captions were made. Applying edits clears the transcript, summary and chapters, so they stop matching until you generate them again. See Why rendering clears captions, summary and chapters.
  • You're in a different workspace. Switch to the workspace the recording belongs to and search again.
  • It hasn't finished being created. A recording that has only just started doesn't appear in search.
  • It isn't shared with you. Search never shows recordings you can't open.
  • The words you typed are too short. Try a longer or more distinctive word. If you get "No matches found" or "No recordings matched your search", try fewer words.
