Chapters: generated, added and renamed EN

Turn a long recording into a list people can jump around in.

Chapters are a list of titled moments under your video. Anyone who opens the recording can select a chapter to jump straight to that point. Rekorder can generate the list from your captions, or you can add chapters yourself.

Only the person who owns the recording can generate, add or delete chapters.

Generate chapters

You need captions first, because Rekorder builds chapters from the transcript. See Generate captions for a recording.

  1. Open the recording.
  2. In the Edit tab, select Auto-generate Chapters.
  3. Read the prompt: "Generate chapters for this recording from its transcript using AI?" Select Generate.
  4. When you see "Chapters generated", select OK.

The list appears in the Chapters section below the video. Each chapter has a start time and a short title, and the first one starts at the beginning of the recording. Titles are written in the recording's caption language. See Caption languages, and how the language is chosen.

If there are no captions yet, Rekorder says "Generate captions first — a summary or chapters cannot be created without one."

Add a chapter yourself

Use this when you want the list to follow your own outline. It doesn't need captions.

  1. Play or scrub the video to the moment where the chapter should start.
  2. Under Chapters, select + Add chapters.
  3. The window shows the time it will use. Type a Chapter title.
  4. Save. Press Enter as a shortcut.

The chapter starts at the point where the player is when you open the window. A title can't be empty, and it's cut off at 255 characters. Chapters are always listed in time order, whatever order you add them in.

Rename a chapter

You can't edit a chapter's title once it exists. To change one:

  1. Move the player to the chapter's start time. Selecting the chapter in the list does this.
  2. Select + Add chapters and enter the new title.
  3. Delete the old chapter (see below).

Delete a chapter

Hover over the chapter, select the trash icon and confirm. "This chapter will be removed." This removes only that chapter.

Generate a new set of chapters

If chapters already exist and you select Auto-generate Chapters, Rekorder warns you: "This will replace the current chapters. Generate new ones from the transcript using AI?" Selecting Generate replaces the whole list, including any chapters you added by hand.

Regenerating your captions doesn't touch your chapters. Chapters aren't updated to match the new transcript, though, so generate them again if you want them to.

Who sees chapters

Anyone who can open the recording sees the chapter list and can select a chapter to jump to it. If there are none, viewers see "No chapters yet." Chapters are also searchable, so a word in a chapter title can help you find a recording. See Find the moment something was said.

Things to know

If generation fails

If you see "Generation failed" with "Something went wrong while generating. Please try again.", wait a moment and select Auto-generate Chapters again. Your existing chapters stay as they were.
