Why rendering clears captions, summary and chapters EN

The timing they were built against no longer exists. Generating them again is quick.

When you use Apply & render, Rekorder clears the recording's transcript, summary and chapters. They were built against the old timeline, and a render changes that timeline. If the recording had captions, Rekorder generates them again for you. The summary and chapters you create again yourself.

Why they're cleared

Captions, chapters and the summary are tied to moments in the video. Every caption line has a start time, and every chapter points to a specific point. A render cuts, reorders and mutes parts of the video, so those moments move. Keeping the old versions would put the wrong words at the wrong times.

Before it renders, the editor asks you to confirm: "Apply edits? This will re-render the video and clear its transcript, summary and chapters."

What is cleared, and what comes back

  • Captions and the transcript. These are cleared. If the recording had captions before the render, Rekorder generates them again for the edited video. It uses the language you'd set for the recording, or detects it. Any fixes you'd made to transcript lines are lost, because the new transcript is generated from scratch.
  • Summary. Cleared. It isn't regenerated automatically.
  • Chapters. Cleared. They aren't regenerated automatically.
  • Everything else stays. Sharing settings, comments and views aren't touched.

Saving a draft doesn't clear anything. Only rendering does. See Save a draft vs Apply & render.

Generate them again

Summaries and chapters are created from the transcript, so start with the captions.

  1. Open the recording's video page and wait for the captions to finish generating. If the recording had no captions before the render, open the Transcript tab and select Generate.
  2. Open the Edit tab.
  3. Select Auto-generate Summary and confirm.
  4. Select Auto-generate Chapters and confirm.

If you try to generate a summary or chapters before there are captions, Rekorder says "Generate captions first — a summary or chapters cannot be created without one."

See Generate a summary and Chapters: generated, added and renamed.

Avoid doing the work twice

  • Render first, then add the rest. Finish your cuts and mutes, render, and only then fix the transcript, generate the summary and create chapters.
  • Restore original does the same. Going back to your original video clears the summary and chapters, and regenerates the captions if there were any. See Editing is non-destructive: getting the original back.
