Remove all the dead air automatically EN

Set a threshold and a minimum length, then cut every gap in one pass.

You can find every quiet gap in a recording and cut them all at once from the editor's Audio tab. You choose how quiet counts as silence and how long a gap has to be, check what Rekorder found, then remove it in one click.

Remove the silences

  1. Open the recording's video page and go to the Edit tab. Choose Remove silences and filler words. This opens the editor on the Audio tab. If you're already in the editor, open the Audio tab yourself. See What you can do in the editor.
  2. Set Silence threshold (dB). Anything quieter than this counts as silence. The default is -30, and you can use any value from -60 to -10.
  3. Set Min silence length (s). Only gaps at least this long are found. The default is 0.5 seconds, and you can use any value from 0.1 to 10.
  4. Choose Detect. Rekorder scans the audio and highlights each silence on the track.
  5. Play the recording to check the highlighted gaps. If they don't look right, change the settings and choose Detect again.
  6. Choose Remove. Every highlighted gap is cut from the timeline, and the parts around them close up.

If nothing qualifies, you'll see "No silences found at the current threshold." and Remove stays unavailable. Lower the minimum length, or raise the threshold toward -10, and try again.

To take back the removal, choose Undo in the Edit tab or press Ctrl/⌘+Z.

Choosing the two settings

  • Threshold. A value closer to -10 counts more sound as silence, so it catches gaps with quiet background noise, such as a fan or room hum. It can also start cutting into soft speech. A value closer to -60 only catches near-total silence.
  • Minimum length. A short minimum tightens natural pauses between words and sentences. A longer one, such as 1 or 2 seconds, only removes the long gaps, and it leaves your normal speaking rhythm alone.

Rekorder leaves a little of the surrounding sound on each side of a gap, so the cut doesn't clip the start or end of a word.

A good way to start is with the defaults. If the result feels too choppy, raise the minimum length. If quiet gaps aren't being found, raise the threshold a few decibels at a time.
