Fans, air conditioning and keyboard clatter, filtered after the fact - gentle, balanced or aggressive.
The background noise filter cleans up the audio of a recording you've already made. It reduces steady noise such as fans, air conditioning and keyboard clatter, and evens out the loudness of the whole recording. You choose how strong the filtering is, and you can change it or switch it off at any time.
Only the person who owns the recording can use the filter. It's available on the Free and Pro plans.
| Level | What it does |
|---|---|
| Off | No filtering. The recording uses its original audio. |
| Low | Gentle noise reduction. |
| Medium | Balanced noise reduction. This is the recommended level. |
| High | Aggressive noise reduction, for noisy recordings. |
Start with Medium. If noise is still noticeable, try High. If your voice sounds thin or processed, go back to Low. Stronger levels remove more noise, but they can also affect your voice.
A spinner shows while Rekorder processes the audio. When it finishes, the player reloads with the new audio and a small badge appears next to Background noise filter: LOW, MED or HIGH. Hover over the badge to see which level is applied. While the spinner is showing, you can't open the filter again.
The filter changes the recording itself, so anyone you've shared it with hears the cleaned-up audio too.
Open Background noise filter again and pick a different level. To remove the filter, pick Off and click Apply. The badge disappears.
Rekorder saves your original audio before the first time it filters. Every change is made from that saved original, not from audio that has already been filtered. Switching levels or applying the filter several times therefore never makes the sound worse, and Off brings back the original.
The filter also adjusts the volume of the whole recording to a consistent level. A recording can sound louder or quieter after you apply it. Off brings back the original volume.
When you edit the recording and render it with Apply & render, the applied level is reset to Off and the badge clears. Rekorder filters the edited audio from that point on, so open Background noise filter again if you want the filter on the edited recording. For how rendering works, see Save a draft vs Apply & render.
If you saved a copy of the recording to Google Drive, applying the filter makes that copy out of date. See When a Drive copy is out of date.
