Where the option is, where the copies land, and what happens while one uploads.
You can copy a recording to your own Google Drive from its menu. Rekorder puts the copy in a folder called Rekorder in My Drive and uploads it in the background, so you can keep working while it goes.
Where the option is
Save to Drive is in the menu of a recording. You'll find that menu in two places:
- On the recording's card in your library.
- In the header of the recording's video page.
The option only appears if you're allowed to download the recording. If it's missing, see Who can save a recording to Drive.
Save a recording
- Open the recording's menu and choose Save to Drive.
- The first time, Rekorder explains what connecting Drive means. Choose Connect Google Drive and sign in to the Google account you want to use.
- On Google's consent screen, leave the Google Drive box ticked. If you untick it, Rekorder can't connect and asks you to try again.
- When you see "Google Drive connected", choose Done. The save starts on its own.
Once you're connected, later saves skip these steps. Choosing Save to Drive starts the upload straight away. To manage or remove the connection, see Connect or disconnect Google Drive.
Where the copy lands
- The copy is an MP4 file in a folder named Rekorder, directly in My Drive. Rekorder creates the folder the first time you save.
- The file has the same name it would have if you downloaded the recording.
- It's the current version of the recording, including any edits you've already applied.
- The copy is yours. Deleting or editing the recording in Rekorder doesn't change it.
- Rekorder can only see and manage the files it creates. It can't see anything else in your Drive. See What Rekorder can see in your Google Drive.
Rekorder finds its folder by name. If you rename or move it, or make your own folder called Rekorder, Rekorder creates a new Rekorder folder at the next save.
While it uploads
The upload runs in the background. You can keep working or close the page.
- The menu item reads Saving to Drive… and can't be clicked until the upload finishes.
- A Google Drive badge appears in the header of the video page. Hover over it to see the upload progress as a percentage.
- If you edit or clean up the audio of the recording while its upload is queued, the upload waits for that to finish. That way the copy isn't out of date the moment it arrives.
- If Google can't be reached for a moment, Rekorder retries a few times, with longer waits in between, before giving up.
- You can have up to three recordings uploading at once. If you start a fourth, Rekorder asks you to wait for one to finish.
When the upload finishes, the menu item changes to Open in Drive and the badge links to the file. Hover over the badge to see that the copy is in your Rekorder folder.
Save again after an edit
A copy doesn't update by itself. If the recording changes after you save it, the badge shows that the copy is out of date. Choose Save to Drive again to update it.
If the earlier copy is still in your Rekorder folder, Rekorder replaces its contents, so the file and its link stay the same. If you deleted or moved it, Rekorder saves a new file instead. See When a Drive copy is out of date.
If you delete a copy or move it out of the Rekorder folder, Rekorder notices when you next open the recording or its menu. The menu goes back to Save to Drive.
Troubleshooting
If a save fails, hover over the badge to see why. These are the most common messages:
- Your Google Drive is full. Free up some space in Drive, then save again.
- Rekorder can no longer save to your Google Drive. Google access was removed or has expired. Choose Reconnect when Rekorder offers it, and the save starts again.
- Google Drive was disconnected. Connect it again to save the recording.
- Recording not ready. The recording is still being converted. Wait a few minutes and try again.
- Download not allowed. The owner of the recording doesn't allow downloads, so it can't be saved.
