One behavioural fork, not a payment-icon choice. Compare them before you pick.
Card and PayPal buy the same Pro plan, at the same price, and produce the same invoices. What differs is everything that comes after checkout: whether you can change seats mid-cycle, whether you can switch between monthly and yearly, and where the payment details live. The two are also not equally easy to leave — a PayPal subscription can be moved onto a card at any time and keep its paid period, while going the other way means cancelling and waiting for the period to end.
All of the controls below belong to the workspace owner.
| Card | PayPal | |
|---|---|---|
| Add seats mid-cycle | Yes. You pay a prorated amount for the days left in the period and the seats are usable straight away | No. Seat changes only take effect at the next renewal, and only after you approve them in PayPal |
| Remove seats | At the next renewal | At the next renewal, after approval in PayPal |
| Switch monthly ↔ yearly | Yes, from the billing page | No. Cancel, wait for the paid period to end, then subscribe again on the interval you want |
| Change the payment details | Change the card on file in Rekorder | The funding source is managed in your PayPal account |
| Subscribe again while paid time is left | Yes. The remaining time is kept | No. PayPal subscriptions start immediately, so you have to wait until the paid period ends |
| Who takes the renewal payment | Rekorder charges the card on file on your renewal date | PayPal charges the agreement |
| Moving to the other method later | Cancel, wait for the period to end, then subscribe with PayPal | One click on the billing page, at no charge, keeping the paid period |
This is the difference most people run into first.
On a card, Add now on the Users & Seats page charges a prorated amount for the days remaining in the current period, and the seats are available immediately. Your renewal date does not move. Removing seats is always scheduled for the next renewal.
On PayPal, no seat change can happen mid-cycle:
Details of each path are in Add seats now, and what proration costs, Remove seats, and when it takes effect and Why a PayPal change is waiting for approval.
A card subscription can switch between monthly and yearly from the billing page. A PayPal subscription cannot: to change interval you have to cancel it and subscribe again with the interval you want, once the paid period ends. See Switch between monthly and yearly billing.
On a card, the card on file lives in Rekorder. You can replace it at any time, and Rekorder warns you before it expires and after it has lapsed — see Change the card on file and Your card is expiring, or has expired.
On PayPal, Rekorder holds no payment details. The billing page shows "Billed through PayPal", and which bank account or card funds it is a setting in your PayPal account. View subscription info on the billing page shows the current state of the agreement as PayPal reports it.
Both methods renew automatically on the workspace's renewal date, and you get a reminder email before either. The difference is who takes the money: Rekorder charges the card itself, while PayPal charges its own agreement. A card charge can occasionally ask you to authenticate the payment; a PayPal charge follows whatever your PayPal account does.
If a renewal fails, both end up in the same place — the subscription is marked past due and you have a grace window to fix it before Pro stops. A renewal payment failed covers what happens and what to do.
This is free, keeps the paid period you already have, and is the usual fix when PayPal will not let you do something.
Pro keeps running until your existing renewal date throughout, and no date moves. If you leave the payment page without entering a card, nothing is broken, but nothing renews either: Pro simply ends on that date. Once the card is in place, seat changes on the Users & Seats page work normally.
If the paid period has already run out — for example a PayPal renewal that failed — there is nothing left to carry across. Change then takes you to pricing and you buy Pro again with a card, at the normal price.
There is no one-click route in this direction, because PayPal cannot start a subscription that defers its first charge. You would have to cancel, let the paid period run out, and then subscribe again with PayPal. While your workspace still has active Pro time, PayPal is unavailable at checkout and says so; card checkout stays available.
Cancelling works the same way on both: the next renewal stops, Pro stays active until the end of the paid period, and the paid seats are released on that date. Cancelling cannot be undone on either method. The one difference is that a cancelled PayPal agreement vanishes from your PayPal account immediately, even though Pro carries on here until the period ends. See Cancel a subscription, and what you keep.
